Agency Description:
Covenant House New Jersey has been providing services to homeless and at-risk youth since 1989. The Covenant House mission calls on us to serve suffering children of the street with absolute respect and unconditional love. Our programs, located in Atlantic City, Newark, Montclair and Elizabeth offer a continuum of care and services to youth 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. CHNJ responds to their immediate and basic needs by providing food, shelter, vocational classes, education services, clothing, legal services, counseling and case management services. The agency's purpose is to assist these young people in developing short-term and long-term goals by offering them opportunities so that they may become independent and productive members of their community.

Project Description:
This is an opportunity to work on an individual basis with a homeless young person to improve their academic skills. Volunteers will provide assistance in reading comprehension, mathematics, language arts and GED preparation. Tutors will also assist homeless youth to bolster their basic literacy skills.

Special Skills or Tools Required:
Genuine passion to help youth with academic endeavors. Patience is also a required trait.
